Bali Lowered Alert Status Will Allow Tourism Economy to Rapidly Revive

NusaBali quotes the chairman of the Bali Licensed Guide Association (HPI), I Nyoman Nuarta, commenting on an expected increase in holiday visitors, said on the day following the downgrading of the alert, “Although (the change) will not be spontaneous, we’ll feel the effects in a week or two.”

Nuarta said many licensed guides were left without guiding assignments after the high warning alert was imposed for 38 days starting from September 22, 2017.

He now expects the workloads for guides to improve markedly in the coming few weeks.

Speaking separately, the chairman of the Bali chapter of the Indonesian Association of Travel Agents (ASITA), I Ketut Ardans, sounded a similar note, saying: “This condition (the lowering of the alert status) will certainly be informed to our partners abroad.

In the condition of ‘awas’ (the highest rating) Bali was safe, what’s more with the alert lowered to 'siaga' it’s still safe.”

Ardana said that while he had yet to receive a response to the lowered alert level from overseas partners of ASITA in the two days following the change in status.

He said he felt certain that these partners are aware of the lowered status. Adding: “There no need to be worried about holidaying in Bali. Nonetheless, people need to remain aware.”

During the 38-days of the highest alert status for Mount Agung, the Balinese tourism economy suffered substantial setbacks as arrivals declined and bookings were canceled.

Estimates of the business downturn ranged between 20-60%.

Banyak warga yang berada di radius aman sudah mulai meninggalkan kamp pengungsian di beberapa titik di Bali. Seperti apa yang saya kutip dari : “Kegempaan sudah turun, ukuran lab deformasi masih menunjukkan adanya penggemukan. Kemudian, asap solfatara sampai saat ini belum terlihat. Tapi terakhir, perkembangannya memang berubah dari tanggal 13 September sampai hari ini,” jelas Suantika, Minggu (1/10/2017).

Namun, kondisi Gunung Agung saat ini, gempa telah terasa hampir 15 hari.

Suantika menjelaskan, dirinya memprediksi tekanan magma hingga saat ini masih tetap, tetapi kekuatan batuan di permukaan semakin melemah

“Memang kondisinya berbeda dibandingkan letusan 1963. Jika nanti Gunung Agung meletus, prekusor tentunya akan lebih banyak di sini. Prekusor itu tanda letusan berupa gempa-gempa terasa cukup lama. Cukup aneh juga,” jelasnya.

“Mungkin nanti kalau awal letusan sama. Walaupun sama, Gunung Agung kan lama tidak meletus. Sekali meletus pembuka memungkinkan ada lontaran batuan-batuan berpasir sejauh 6 km radial. Diprediksi akan luar biasa,” tandasnya.

"Biasanya di teknik material kalau magma terus menekan material maka pada saat tertentu material pecah menjadi kecil-kecil. Kepadatan makin kurang menyebabkan terbukanya pipa magma," kata Suantika.

Indikasi terbentuknya pipa magma ini juga dapat terlihat dari indikator deformasi atau penggelembungan gunung yang terus terjadi dan terlihatnya asap solfatara.

Menurut Suantika, Gunung Agung mengalami tren penggelembungan semakin naik dari hari ke hari walau dalam skala mikro meter. "Penggelembungan menunjukkan kecenderungan terus naik dalam mikro meter,"
